Paraphrase: restating a text (in your own words)
Summarize: retelling main ideas (in your own words)
Quote: write EXACTLY what is written, with quotation marks around it.
Captions: Phrase or title that is used to describe an image.
Topic Sentence: start of the paragraph, usually states the main idea.
Conclusion: the end of the paper, chapter, or story.
Paragraph: A group of sentences that focus on one idea.
Introduction: The beginning of a paper, chapter, or story.
Heading: Appears at the beginning of a section/chapter and states the focus of the
reading.
Concluding Sentence: The last part of a paragraph that transitions to the next
thought.
Graphic organizer: classifies information (ex: maps, diagrams)
Diagrams: labels and illustration, identifies information in an image (ex: maps,
charts, graphic organizers)
Illustration: Image or picture relevant to the text (graph represents title, map:
country represents the name)
